Silicon Labs jumps into Wi-Fi with reduced-power offerings

Silicon Labs is continuing down the path of being all things to all developers when it comes to the IoT. The latest evidence come in the form of a new Wi-Fi portfolio aimed at simplifying the design of power-sensitive, battery-operated Wi-Fi products like IP security cameras, point-of-sale (PoS) terminals, and consumer health care devices. Optimized for energy efficiency, the WF200 transceivers and WFM200 modules support 2.4-GHz 802.11 b/g/n WiFi.

SiLabs claims that the WFM200 transceiver module, at 6.5 by 6.5 mm, is the smallest available pre-certified system-in-package (SiP) module with an integrated antenna. The WF200 measures 4 by 4 mm and is housed in a QFN32 package. Other features (of both the IC and the module) include low transmit (138 mA) and receive (48 mA) power and a 200-µA average WiFi power consumption.

Both the WF200 transceivers and WFM200 are now sampling. Production is planned for the fourth quarter of this year.
