Zigbee Dotdot now available over Thread IP networks

Dotdot is an interoperable application-layer language for the Internet of Things. The organizations hope its compatibility with low-power wireless mesh Thread networks will unify IoT deployments.

Davis and San Ramon, Calif. The Zigbee Alliance and Thread Group have announced that the Zigbee Dotdot specification is now available over Thread’s IPv6 network. Dotdot is an interoperable application-layer language for Internet of Things (IoT) devices. The two organizations hope that its compatibility with low-power wireless mesh Thread networks will help unify connected device deployments.

Dotdot over Thread is not a new standard, but rather facilitates interoperability between the Zigbee application layer and Thread networks.

“Dotdot gives Thread adopters an important option for that open, end-to-end connectivity and interoperability,” says Grant Erickson, president of the Thread Group.

The Dotdot specification is currently available to Zigbee Alliance members, with additional resources such as the Dotdot Commissioning Application and Dotdot Certification program scheduled for release in Summer 2018. The Thread 1.1 specification and certification program were launched in February of this year. The two organizations share common authorized test service providers to help ensure certification for Dotdot over Thread adopters.

“This marks the first of many partnerships to come as we extend our application layer across additional networks to accelerate time to market and unify the IoT for all stakeholders,” says Tobin Richardson, Zigbee Alliance president and CEO.

More information on Dotdot over Thread will be presented in an upcoming webinar on December 14.
