Calculate cost for a custom IIoT IC (Hint: It’s cheaper than you think)

November 15, 2017 ECD Staff

S3 Semiconductors’ free online bill of materials (BOM) calculator provides an inside look into how creating a custom integrated circuit (IC) for your next Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) application can be economically viable, even in low to medium volumes. The tool considers variables such as the number of units being manufactured; how long the product will be manufactured; processor characteristics; and whether analog, data converter, and RF components are present in your design. In addition to estimating the cost of developing a custom IC, the BOM calculator provides a guide to break-even volumes.

The tool aims to disprove the myth that custom ICs are too expensive for low-volume designs, and demonstrate the benefits of component integration in IIoT systems. The BOM calculator can be found at www.s3semi.com/bom-calculator.
