The aiSim2 engine renders every frame in a simulation identically down to the pixel level, even on heterogeneous hardware platforms based locally or in the cloud.

HELSINKI. AImotive has released the aiSim2 simulator, an autonomous vehicle technology for testing and validating self-driving cars. Unlike game-based simulators, aiSim2 relies on a purpose-built engine and optimized hardware that adhere to the laws of physics and deliver high levels of determinism and realism.

Because game-based vehicle simulators do not provide deterministic results, minor differences in calculations can produce different results in identical tests. The aiSim2 engine renders every frame in a simulation identically down to the pixel level, even on heterogeneous hardware platforms based locally or in the cloud. This means that self-driving systems under test produce outputs based on changes to the system itself, not differences in rendering.

aiSim2 uses Khronos’ Vulkan API to enable efficient execution on a range of single- or multi-processor GPU system configurations. This enables hardware agnosticism as well as increased performance for hardware/software-in-the-loop testing.

“We realized that gaming engines are not sufficiently accurate for automotive simulation,” says Gergely Debreczeni, Chief Scientist at AImotive. “We believe the aiSim2 engine is a game changer, enabling us to deliver superior capabilities to our customers and partners as a part of a hardware-in-the-loop/software-in-the-loop testing for AVs.”
