The bane of power connectors is the lack of interoperability, especially between the ever-popular barrel connectors. Now, newer technologies such as USB Power Delivery (USB PD) enable faster, higher wattage power delivery anyway, while also being standardized over the USB Type-C interface.
USB PD over Type-C has other advantages, too: Costs can be reduced because most consumers will already have a compatible charger and cable; electronic waste can also be minimized because fewer incompatible chargers will be produced.
