PHOENIX. New research from Avnet’s Product Developer Index suggests that security continues to challenge embedded and IoT engineers. The Product Developer Index surveyed nearly 1,200 developers, 81 percent of whom cited security as the greatest technological challenge in IoT product development.
The Product Developer Index further revealed obtaining finances (34 percent), identifying the best technologies (26 percent), and achieving product certification (22 percent), as three other significant challenges in IoT development. Time and the cost of moving from design to manufacturing were also identified as significant pain points.
58 percent of respondents indicated that developing and testing prototypes has become easier in the past year, while sourcing (up 9 percent) and scaling production (up 16 percent) also improved year over year.
IoT and sensors were selected as today’s most important technologies by 61 percent of survey takers. 26 percent of developers indicated that IoT is also the most improved technology of 2018, just edging out artificial intelligence (25 percent).
