OmniVision's Latest Compact Medical Camera Claims Fastest Frame Rate

OmniVision Technologies released the OC0SA, their latest in the CameraCubeChip family of wafer-level camera modules for medical applications such as disposable endoscopes. The module offers a resolution of 800x800 with a frame rate of 60fps, or 400x400 resolution at 90fps. The 2.6 x 1.6-mm imager integrates an infrared (IR) cut filter to eliminate chromatic effects from IR light that can cause color fidelity loss, and offers 120° and 90° field-of-view options. 

To enable use within the body, the OC0SA also offers ETO and STERRAD sterilization capabilities, along with waterproofing and biocompatibility. Features include a power consumption of 82.2 mW, which also reduces heat at the distal tip of the endoscope. In addition, all CameraCubeChip modules are reflowable, and can be mounted to a printed circuit board simultaneously with other components, using automated surface-mount assembly equipment.

OmniVision’s PureCel Plus-S stacked-pixel technology includes a buried color filter array for better angular response, a higher chief ray angle, and deep trench isolation for reduced crosstalk. In-module horizontal and vertical subsampling capabilities allow doctors to zoom in on specific areas within the body, while the light-source syncing and strobe function enables better control of image brightness. The OC0SA also integrates 2x2 binning support, which combines four pixels into one for higher sensitivity while achieving a frame rate of 90fps.
