Why Fanless IoT Computing Solutions Are Driving Smarter IoT Applications

The exponential growth of IoT has IT managers seeking robust, reliable Edge Computing solutions. Fanless systems deliver noise-free performance, thermal controls, dust immunity, and energy efficiency.

The exponential growth of the Internet of Things drives IT managers to seek robust and reliable Edge Computing solutions. These solutions must run applications efficiently in challenging environments where lack of maintenance, dust, heat damage, humidity, shock, and vibration are common causes of system failure.

Traditional computing solutions fail at a much higher rate in such environments, resulting in product errors, data corruption, and, in the worst-case scenario, asset loss. In order to overcome these obstacles, fanless systems deliver noise-free performance, excellent thermal controls, dust immunity, and energy efficiency.

The most common cooling method for electronic devices is the installation of multiple fans within a chassis, to create a seamless airflow throughout the system. While this traditional method does indeed cool the system, it also increases air temperature in the surrounding environments. In turn, the increased ambient air temperature degrades the optimal operating temperature of devices and attracts dust particles, which ultimately leads to breakdowns.

Fanless designs remove such concerns and shift the paradigm in an efficient and highly effective way. The deployment of fanless systems promotes a number of key advantages over traditional active cooling systems, including:

  • Silent Operation
  • Wide Operating Temperature
  • Increased Reliability
  • Shock and Vibration Resistance
  • Dust Free
  • Robust Design for Extreme Environments

As a global leader in green computing and high-performance, high-efficiency server and storage technology, Supermicro is dedicated to developing fanless embedded systems. Supermicro's Embedded Fanless systems support Intel® technologies and are housed in a robust chassis that boasts IP51 dust and water proofing, 30G shock proofing, and 5G vibration resistance. The systems meet strict CE, FCC Class B, UL, CB, and VCCI safety standards to ensure a seamless and lengthy deployment.
