March 21st, 2008

BOULDER, Colo., March 20, 2008 – ITT Visual Information Solutions (ITT VIS), a wholly owned subsidiary of ITT Corporation, announced the newest release of IDL, its premiere computing environment for data visualization and analysis. The IDL 7.0 release delivers all the visualization and analysis power that tens of thousands of users depend on with a new, modern development environment that helps users get answers from data more quickly and easily.

New IDL development environment based on the Eclipse platform

IDL 7.0 introduces a new development environment, the IDL Workbench, based on the popular Eclipse development platform. The IDL Workbench gives users all the advantages of a contemporary development environment, including modern code management, development and debugging tools. The IDL Workbench makes it easier than ever to develop IDL applications with a project-based development scheme that features robust code editing and debugging tools such as hover help, content assistance, syntax highlighting, code commenting, and a new debugging perspective.

Cross-platform development with native tools and interfaces

IDL 7.0 delivers a truly cross-platform solution, allowing users to develop from familiar, platform-native interfaces with consistent features and workflows across each platform including Windows, Macintosh, Solaris and Linux.

Extend IDL applications easily with new, plug-in architecture

IDL 7.0 provides a powerful plug-in architecture that allows users to easily update IDL and integrate code written for IDL or Eclipse. IDL plug-ins can be easily accessed from new RSS feeds that give users a direct connection to the IDL Developer Network from within IDL. The IDL Developer Network includes IDL and Eclipse plug-ins, code contributions, and functionality developed by the greater IDL user community.

Future IDL developments will take advantage of the IDL Workbench and plug-in architecture of IDL 7.0. “Creating a new development platform for IDL is just the beginning,” stated Richard Cooke, president and COO of ITT Visual Information Solutions. “IDL 7.0 provides the ideal platform for us to continue to enhance IDLs usability and deliver not only development innovation but also a robust set of interactive analysis and visualization tools to the next generation of science and technology professionals.”
