Power Integrations' LED drivers support multiple topologies

LED lighting is clearly the rage, and solutions to support the latest LEDS are making the technology more and more advantageous every day. One example of that is the LYTSwitch-5 single-stage LED driver IC family developed by Power Integrations. The devices in this family combine PFC and constant-current output, as well as support multiple common LED driver topologies.

Noting that solid-state lighting applications have highly variable driver requirements, and that power engineers are often challenged to develop optimized designs quickly in response to requests from lighting designers, the LYTSwitch-5 family supports the safety-rated isolated flyback topology for ballast applications and non-isolated topologies such as buck and buck-boost for low-cost lamps and bulbs. In addition, a choice of low- or high-side switching lets designers optimize for low EMI or reduced inductor complexity. By achieving over 90 percent efficiency, 0.9 PF, less than 5 percent THD, and +/-3 percent current regulation accuracy over line, load, production variance, temperature, and multiple topologies, LYTSwitch-5 is well suited for solid-state lighting applications below 25 W.

The high efficiency enabled by LYTSwitch-5 LED driver designs results in smaller heat sinks, more compact implementations, and increased lifetime. Highly accurate CC regulation reduces the degree of overdesign required to guarantee compliance to lumen output standards from regulatory bodies such as the California Energy Commission (CEC) and ENERGY STAR. MOSFET options at 650 V and 725 V are available to optimize surge-withstand performance for various product types and geographical installations.

LYTSwitch-5 LED driver ICs offer up to 25 W, an extended universal input range (90 Vac to 308 Vac), and a 2:1 output voltage range. Protection features include thermal foldback with end-stop shutdown, short-circuit protection, input and output OVP, overcurrent protection, and safe brown-in and brown-out.

LYTSwitch-5 IC samples are available now. Devices start at $0.46 in 10,000-piece quantities. A reference design, DER-515, is available for download.
