The networking world is continuing its decades-long evolution toward ever-higher data-rates, ever-higher traffic volume, a more diverse mix of traffic types, and packet-based protocols with an overlay of connection-based mechanisms.

But since 100 Gbps Ethernet is not yet fully standardized, a reprogrammable platform is needed to provide a flexible bridge with additional user-defined buffering, processing, and scheduling functions.
